Wildfires Across Australia Cause Damage To Millions Of Acres
Source: 'Catastrophic' Wildfires Continue To Rage Across Australia : NPRExtreme heat and drought conditions have caused hundreds of fires to spark throughout the country, many of which have been burning for weeks. A large portion of Australia is on fire after weeks of extreme heat, strong winds and drought that have created ideal conditions for hundreds of bushfires to thrive across the country. Several fires have been burning since November, particularly in the eastern state of New South Wales. The fires threaten many of Australia's largest population centers, including Sydney, a city of more than 5 million, which has been cloaked in smoke. Blazes have destroyed hundreds of homes and almost 3 million acres of bushland, threatening the habitat of countless wildlife, including already endangered koalas. One fire in the state of Victoria has reportedly become large enough to generate its own weather. The fires come after years of drought in parts of the country and record-breaking heat. Earlier this week, Australia had its hottest day on record — only to break that record the following day. And fire season has just begun, leaving many bracing for worse.

Garage Fire In Hempfield Twp

A Hempfield man suffered minor burns to his hands while attempting to remove equipment from his burning garage Saturday morning, firefighters said.
The block building, which contained woodworking equipment, was a total loss, according to Midway-St. Clair Fire Chief Rich Kepple.
A township fire investigator will look into the cause of the blaze that was reported at about 7:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Fry Hollow Road.
The owner was treated at the scene by an ambulance crew.
Firefighters were able to limit damage to the roof of a second, larger garage containing a tractor that was separated from the destroyed building by a walkway, Kepple said.

Fire In Vegas Kills 6
A fire in a three-story Las Vegas apartment building killed six people and injured 13 others, The Associated Press reported Saturday.
Fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said that it was “the worst fire fatality that we’ve had in the city of Las Vegas since the inception of the fire department.”
Szymanski said that the fire was accidentally caused by a first-floor unit’s stove. Residents told investigators that some residents used their stoves for warmth because the building lacked heat.
Most of the injuries were from smoke inhalation, though Szymanski said one victim had broken legs and a possible broken back after falling or jumping from an upper-floor window to escape the heavy smoke.
The fire was largely contained to that one unit, although smoke did reach the rest of the building, according to Szymanski.
Because of the smoke damage, Szymanski said the building is uninhabitable. Around 30 people have been displaced as a result.
The Southern Nevada Red Cross said it sent a team to provide assistance, the AP reported.
A woman identifying herself as a co-owner of the apartment building, Malinda Mier, told news organizations that she was saddened, but did not say in a statement whether the building had heat.
Szymanski said firefighters reported hearing smoke alarms going off, but not fire alarms. The State Fire Marshal’s Office will investigate for code violations, including any involving fire alarms, he said.
The city’s code enforcement office did not immediately return telephone messages Saturday. State law requires landlords to provide heat, but it also leaves it up to residents to notify the landlord.
Saturday’s fire was possibly the deadliest in the Las Vegas area since 1980, when 87 people died and more than 700 were injured in a fire at the MGM Grand Hotel.
Fire officials said around 50 people were displaced and the Southern Nevada Red Cross said it sent personnel to provide assistance. County records list the building as having 41 units.
Because of the soot throughout the building, residents will not be able to go back into the building, Szymanski said.
Police had taped off the building, the front of which was blackened by smoke.
When he got out, Sykes saw one apartment on the first floor “was literally just fire and smoke coming out of the windows,” he said.
He and his wife eventually got out of the building by making their way to a neighbor’s apartment. There, they joined other residents in climbing one-by-one out of a bedroom window onto an air conditioning unit before dropping about 15 feet (4.57 meters) down to the ground below, Sykes said.
He and his wife helped four adults and four children escape, handing the children down to adults, he said.
Sykes said he heard a smoke alarm go off only after he and his wife were already out in the hallway contending with the smoke.
“I’m telling you, that place is totally not fit for anybody to live,” he said.
Sykes, who said he’d lived there about six months, said there had been a small fire in the same building about six months ago.
The fire department warned the owner then that smoke detectors had to be installed, and they were put in about a month later, he said.
“But after that, this is what happens,” he said. “Now my wife and I, we need to find a place to live. We’re homeless for the time being.”
The fire caused an estimated $475,000 in damage, Szymanski told the Review-Journal.
Sal Moreno, who lives in the apartment building next door, said police banged on his door around 4:30 a.m. and he fled into a street lit up with police cars, ambulances and fire trucks.
“They made us leave,” Moreno said. “There was people running out with their cats and their dog. ... It was hectic. It was hectic. It was crazy.”
He said the building that burned was low-rent, and he’d heard some of the residents were using their ovens to stay warm because they didn’t have heat.
“It’s kind of a rough little neighborhood,” he said.

WESTMORELAND COUNTY (KDKA) — The capture of two fugitives in Westmoreland County led to a drug bust that netted three other fugitives, three stolen firearms and 12 bricks of heroin in a hotel room with children inside.
According to Westmoreland County’s sheriff, the drug bust that netted several fugitives and stolen firearms started at a home in Greensburg on Willow Avenue.
“We were looking for two fugitives,” Westmoreland County Sheriff Jonathan Held said.
When deputies knocked on the door, homeowner Christine Barron answered and said the wanted pair wasn’t there.
However, a deputy at the back door saw one of the fugitives running toward the back of the home.
The two fugitives, wanted on drug-related charges, were arrested inside the home.
Officials found several alleged crack pipes, and Barron was charged with hindering apprehension and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Higher Westmoreland County Taxes

Westmoreland County officials said a 2.4% property tax increase approved Thursday is needed to balance the 2020 budget, a spending plan that will nearly drain a surplus fund and relies on a $10 million loan to pay the bills at the start of next year.
Commissioners Gina Cerilli and Charles Anderson approved the $341 million budget, which they said retains the current level of county services but carries virtually no safety net for unexpected expenses and relies on about $1.9 million in new revenue generated by a half-mill increase in property taxes.

Rowlng And anti-trans
J.K. Rowling has found herself in the crosshairs of social media after she tweeted her support for a woman accused of being anti-trans. Earlier today, Variety noted that the Harry Potter author had posted a message in support of Maya Forstater, a researcher who was fired from her job after writing that a person couldn't change their biological sex. While Rowling's tweet was generally supportive and inclusive, it was the last line that drew ire.
Dress however you please.
Call yourself whatever you like.
Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you.
Live your best life in peace and security.
But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real? #IStandWithMaya #ThisIsNotADrill
42.8K people are talking about this
Forstater was a visiting fellow at the Centre for Global Development, and recently lost a court challenge over her firing. The presiding judge ruled that the termination was valid, issuing a statement that read, in part, "by the sex she considered appropriate even if it violates their dignity and/or creates an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment."
The criticism of Rowling's tweet was significant, with the Human Rights Campaign, stating "Trans women are women," which was aimed squarely at the author. Fellow author Mara Wilson tweeted "What, exactly, is to be gained by using your platform to be cruel and exclusionary to one of the world’s most vulnerable populations?"
Attorney Jill Filipovic also weighed in, and while she advocates for free speech, she added that this protection "doesn't mean you get to maintain employment while discriminating & creating workplace hostility."
Much of the response from longtime fans of Rowling's work have been hit especially hard by this news, as she has openly been supportive of the LGBTQ community -- both in public and in the pages of her books. Earlier this year, while promoting Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, she even confirmed a long-held fan theory about the character of Dumbledore being gay.
0COMMENTS
"It was passionate, and it was a love relationship,” Rowling said about Dumbledore and his past relationship with Grindelwald. "But as happens in any relationship, gay or straight or whatever label we want to put on it, one never knows really what the other person is feeling. You can’t know, you can believe you know."
The third installment of the Fantastic Beasts series, which is set years before the events of Harry Potter, had its production delayed at the beginning of January.
