MacDill on Lockdown

(CNN)Florida's MacDill Air Force Base was briefly locked down Friday morning over concerns about an armed person outside it, officials said.
The base just south of Tampa was locked down around 7 a.m. ET after police reported that an armed and dangerous suspect was near the Tanker Way gate, base spokesman Terry Montrose said.
By 8 a.m., the lockdown was lifted and all of the base's gates except for the one at Tanker Way were opened, base officials said.
"There were no shots fired on MacDill and no injuries to MacDill employees," Montrose said.

Details about the suspect weren't immediately available.
Earlier, US Special Operations Command spokesman Phillip Chitty said the lockdown came amid reports of a shooter and that commands on base were told it wasn't a drill.

Boeing hands over internal employee messages describing 737 Max as “designed by clowns.”

The messages describe coverups, safety concerns, and profit-seeking at the expense of safety.
Things appear to only get worse for Boeing these days and Thursday was no different, as the American company disclosed more than a hundred pages of internal emails and instant messages to congressional investigators that showed employees describing coverups and concern over the safety of the 737 Max airliner. Whether employees are grousing or exaggerating or being darkly sardonic, the internal comments give an unvarnished view of some of those closest to the aerospace manufacturing company’s production of the 737 Max, the plane that has since crashed twice and been grounded worldwide. The nature of the crashes—particularly the functioning of the airliner’s software system—has raised troubling questions about the Boeing’s willingness to pursue profit at the expense of safety, its relationship with regulators, and what exactly it knew about the problems in its marquee aircraft.

Did You Really See More Snow When You Were A Kid?

Pittsburgh Weather: Did You Really See More Snow When You Were A Kid?
Kids in the 1960s did see more snow.
That was the snowiest decade since 1900, with 541.1 inches of snowfall over that 10-year stretch.
WEATHER LINKS:
Current Conditions | School Delays & Closings | Local Radar | Weather App | Photos
One thing you will notice on this graph, though, is that 2010-19 was the second snowiest decade.
It lagged behind the snowiest decade by almost 50 inches, but that really isn’t much over the span of a decade.
If you were a kid in the 1960s, KDKA meteorologist Ray Petelin agrees with you that there was more snow “back then.”
Everyone else has seen more snow over the last 10 years.

War Powers Resolution

(CNN)The House of Representatives on Thursday approved the Iran War Powers resolution -- an effort to restrain President Donald Trump's ability to use military action against Iran without congressional approval -- with the support of three Republicans.
Republicans Reps. Matt Gaetz and Francis Rooney of Florida as well as Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky all crossed party lines to vote in favor of the resolution.
The measure, which passed by a nearly party line vote of 224-194 on Thursday evening, will next go to the Senate.
The structure of the House resolution is unique, however, calling into question whether it is actually legally binding. It was introduced as a concurrent resolution, a type of resolution often used for "sense of Congress" bills. They don't go to the President for a signature, and they aren't legally binding.

But House Democrats are arguing that concurrent resolutions under the War Powers Act are a special case, and they are legally binding. Republicans, however, say the resolution is not binding.
Rep. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, a former CIA analyst and freshman Democrat, is the sponsor of the resolution, which calls on the President "to terminate the use of United States Armed Forces to engage in hostilities in or against Iran" unless Congress declares war or enacts "specific statutory authorization" for the use of armed forces.

Milky Way News

Researchers recently released simulations of the Large Magellanic Cloud — a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way — and found that cosmic rays from a starburst event are starting to rip it apart.
Cosmic rays are tiny charged particles accelerated to nearly the speed of light through some of the most violent events in the universe. By themselves they're not too awful, but in big enough numbers they can start to wreak havoc on entire galaxies.
A team of researchers recently released simulations of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) — a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way — and found that cosmic rays from a starburst event are starting to rip it apart. For now, thankfully, the LMC seems to be holding itself together.

Ligonier Beach To Open Maybe

The shuttered Ligonier Beach could open to the public once more this summer, but visitors shouldn’t plan on bringing their swim trunks just yet.
Ligonier Township in November bought the landmark swimming pool and restaurant along Route 30 just east of Ligonier from Sherry and Steven Kozar, for $230,000. This week, township supervisors hired an architect and appointed a committee to come up with a preferred plan for redeveloping the site.
After more than 90 years in operation, the attraction remained closed for the 2018 and 2019 summer seasons after flooding damaged pool pumps and the restaurant’s furnace.
“We’re moving forward to work with an engineer, to talk about a development plan by April and renting out pavilions for Memorial Day,” said Terry Carcella, township manager.
Supervisors named EADS Group as their engineering consultant for both the Ligonier Beach project and for other general township needs. The firm replaces Markosky Engineering, which passed on further work with the township.
EADS will be paid $125 for each township meeting attended. The township also will pay an hourly rate ranging from $123 to $133, depending on the staff member assigned and the type of work performed.
Grants of $250,000 from the Katherine Mabis McKenna Foundation and $136,000 from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources covered the property purchase and will provide enough “to get started with cleanup and development,” Carcella said.
He said the committee, working with the architectural consultant and receiving technical assistance from the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, will look to develop a master plan for Ligonier Beach, weighing options for turning it into a viable township park.
Yet to be determined is the cost of rehabilitating and reopening the pool, which was temporarily filled in June for filming of an independent feature about the sinking of the Titanic.
“It held water for the filming, but it has major cracks,” Carcella said. “The pump building is shot and needs to be demolished.”
He doesn’t expect the pool will be ready this summer. “There’s no way we could prepare for that,” he said. “It’s going to take us three to four months to put a plan together.”
Crews recently removed 10 dead trees from the site, but not before one damaged a pavilion.

Arrests For Arson In Australia

Police in Australia have arrested and charged two dozen people they say deliberately lit blazes during the wildfire season that has so far killed at least 18 people, destroyed thousands of homes and ravaged over 10 million acres of land.
New South Wales police said that since the beginning of November, 24 people have been charged over allegedly deliberately lighting fires as officers continue to investigate the role that arson has played in the devastation. Starting a wildfire can result in a jail sentence of up to 21 years.
"Investigations into the cause, origin and overall impact of fires are continuing and since the latest State of Emergency was declared...Strike Force Tronto has provided expertise to six police area commands and eight police districts," NSW police said in a statement.

Employee Found Dead

Police told Channel 2’s Michael Seiden right now they don’t suspect foul play, but they won’t know for sure until the medical examiner completes their investigation.Co-workers told Seiden that Leslie Kochensparger had only been on the job for two weeks at the store before she was found dead inside a locked bathroom.
Police say another employee made the disturbing discovery on Monday morning at the store location along Barrett Parkway.
“It gives me chills to think about it. Very sad,” one shopper said.
According to a police report, an employee tried to use the bathroom, but the door was locked.
When he returned, it was still locked so he knocked several times.
When he didn’t get an answer, investigators said he took matters into his own hands using his pocketknife to open the lock.
As soon as he walked in, he found his co-worker "slumped over the toilet," the report said.
He immediately called 911 and then moved her to the floor.
On Tuesday night, a spokesperson for Whole Foods Market sent Seiden a statement saying, "We are grieving the loss of our fellow team member and our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time."
Management shut the store down Monday so employees could grieve at home. An employee told Seiden that the company is offering grief counselors to anyone who has been impacted by this tragedy.

Kim Jong-un has said he is ending the suspension of nuclear and long-range missile tests

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has said he is ending the suspension of nuclear and long-range missile tests put in place during talks with the US.
Mr Kim also said his country would soon introduce "a new strategic weapon".
But he left a door open for dialogue, and said the scope of any testing would depend on the US's "attitude".
The momentum of the past few years has stalled, as Washington refuses to lift sanctions until Pyongyang fully abandons its nuclear programme.
The North conducted several smaller weapons tests late in 2019, in what was seen as an attempt to pressure the US into making concessions.
But the self-declared moratorium on nuclear tests and tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that could reach the US mainland had been one of the foundations of the negotiations with Washington.
Pyongyang has not carried out such tests since 2017.

WINDOWS 7's end of life

WINDOWS 7's end of life arrives this month, which means those who want to stay up-to-date will have to pay to upgrade their ageing hardware to Windows 10.
Microsoft has been warning us that this day would come. And now, it’s almost here. Windows 7 end of life lands on January 14, 2020. After that deadline, Windows users running older versions of the desktop operating system will face a difficult choice – cough-up for a hefty bill to upgrade to Windows 10, or brace themselves for some dangerous risks on their home PC.
By ending support for the ageing Windows 7 operating system, which was first launched back in July 2009, Microsoft will stop rolling-out updates with new features, security updates or protections against malware. That means any issues with the software – or any new vulnerabilities discovered by cybercriminals – can be leveraged from indefinitely. Less serious, perhaps – but this also means any annoying bugs or glitches that crop-up will also be immortalised in the operating system.

If you’d like to benefit from the latest security protections and anti-virus solutions from Microsoft, you’ll have to update your machine to an operating system the Redmond-based company does support – namely, Windows 10. Although Microsoft has offered free upgrades to users running official versions of its operating systems in the past, that’s not possible at the moment.

Automated tickets

PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike will monitor drivers’ speed in construction zones and send tickets by mail to reduce accidents.
Beginning Jan. 4, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Pennsylvania Turnpike will begin a 60-day pilot program to formally test what’s called the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement program. The program is designed to cause drivers to slow down in construction areas by setting up speed monitoring equipment in work areas.
After the pilot program is finished, the two state agencies expect to deploy private contractors in white Jeep Cherokee SUVs at various sites throughout the state to monitor speed beginning March 4. If the monitors detect someone going more than 11 miles an hour over the speed limit, the motorist will receive a notice by mail with a warning for the first violation, followed by a $75 fine for a second offense and $150 for each future ticket.

90 Year old Murdered

In a bygone era when guys involved in questionable business dealings sported memorable monikers such as “Egghead,” “Codfish,” “Monster” and “Snooky,” Samuel Rende was just plain Sam.
The 90-year-old Mr. Rende — who was shot to death Saturday near the same Hazelwood streets where he grew up, in what police said was a targeted killing — never had a nickname. He was a man who had long stayed out of the public eye after doing time in the 1980s for his alleged involvement in a murder-for-hire scheme.
Samuel Rende was among those charged in 1981 in the murder-for-hire slaying of Norman McGregor. He pleaded no contest in 1985 to conspiracy.
